Built by Adrian and Patricia Franke in 1982, it started as a wholesale salad nursery specialising in tomatoes and lettuces becoming one of the largest suppliers of superior quality salads in the south east.
The history...
In the mid nineties when the ‘supermarket age’ had clearly begun to make its mark offering cheap f
oods, with little loyalty for British grown products, the nursery began to falter. This became a major turning point for Pinewood. Inspired by Adrian’s brother, who had recently taken over a pot plant nursery in Kent, our saving grace was a crop of geraniums grown alongside the tomatoes in the prop house! This was the start of the nursery as it is now recognised today.
That first crop of geraniums developed into a thriving and diverse business capturing the imagination of the next generation….bringing us to the present time. Now the nursery is
run by sisters, Lizzy and Marie, and Lizzy’s husband Tom under a renewed enthusiasm and drive which introducing a new generation to a business can bring. Not only do we grow over 100,000 bedding plants and 10,000 hanging baskets in the spring and summer, we also grow an amazing 50,000 poinsettias for the Christmas market.
The sheer size of the nursery (the green house covers 2 acres) dictated a predominant wholesale trade. However, we have seen in the last 10 years a huge growth in our retail
customers. This transition has allowed us to diversify our crop range enormously in order to offer customers more choice and inspired garden ideas!
Another extremely exciting addition to the nursery is of course the Farm Shop!
Returning to our roots! Spurred on by the British public’s renewed concern with the origin and flavour of their fresh food – opposed to being purely concerned with cost, the farm shop was opened in December 2006, and continues to grow and diversify its
product range.
We understand the importance of developing and sustaining relationships with our wholesale and retail customers, and it is always our intention to exhaust all possibilities
in order to satisfy our customers’ requirements.
Although now more refined (!) we feel that we have always maintained a relaxed and homely atmosphere at Pinewood where everyone is welcome!
